There isn’t a crowded city or waterfront, just a laid-back little town with great beaches and a little British Bermudian Colonial heritage. There is a small brewery on Grand Turk that produces an alcohol-based Ginger Beer. It is called 'Islander Ginger Beer' and is considered to be the only product manufactured on the island. It's made in a small brewery in the heart of the capital city, Cockburn Town, and can be bought in local bars and restaurants. It's a live yeast-fermented, fresh beverage that must always be kept refrigerated.

Grand Turk

Before Christopher Columbus set foot on the island of Grand Turk during the journey to the new world in 1492, the island was inhibited by Taíno and Lucayan tribes. These earlier settlers left behind a rich heritage and new words (canoe, Caribbean, Caicos) and the names of the island. The indigenous Turk's head cactus named Turks island, while the Lucayan term “caya hico”, meaning string of islands, was mangled to become "Caicos". There are quite a few restaurants and grocery stores in the Cockburn Town area. Cruise Critic went exploring to find what’s available beyond the pier at Grand Turk. Here are our eight favorite Turks and Caicos excursions -- and why you might want to try them, too.

The coral walls which range from 30 feet to more than 7000 feet deep are just a hundred yards out on the water. Explore the colorful burst of marine life in some of the best diving spots in the world. The north creek doesn’t offer much, but you might see some stingrays, barracudas, and turtles in the water. Most kayaking and paddleboarding tours end at the mouth of the inlet right below the lighthouse.

Significant Historical Occurrences on the Island

There’s no main building with services and a waiting room with seating. Instead, the Grand Turk Cruise Center -- as it's officially known -- is a huge indoor-outdoor complex with shops, restaurants, a massive freeform pool and a beach lined with loungers. But traffic is sparse, and with a population of about 5,000, most people know one another's names. You may even see a horse or donkey, once a means of transportation during the days of Grand Turk's salt industry, roaming along Governor's Beach or through the narrow alleys in historic Cockburn Town. Since some of the best snorkeling and diving areas are off the coast and it is difficult to swim out there, take a snorkel boat ride to access the best sites. Book a snorkel and dive excursion with your cruise to enjoy this fun excursion.

Then you will return to the cruise center have a drink, a meal and go enjoy the beach if you have time. To enjoy more of the island, head to the northern direction from cruise center beach and enjoy beaches in a less populated area. To get to the best beach on the island, you will need to take a taxi to Governor’s beach.

There are beautiful monuments and murals erected at the exhibition. It has been open to Carnival and its subsidiary cruise lines like Princess and Holland America ever since. Margaritaville fronts the expansive swimming pool at the Cruise Center, and Jack’s Shack is located a short walk up the coast on a perfect piece of beach with crystal clear ocean water. However, many of the restaurants are on the island of Providenciales. Not that many years ago, local island tables did not know what was going to be on the menu for dinner until the fishing boats brought in their catch of the day.

Right from the cruise center, an island tram will take you to north creek, where you will do a short trail through the wetlands and finally get to the kayaking spot. Your kayaking guide will take you on a 3hr long kayaking journey. The town maintains houses that have beautiful 1800’s British architecture with the Victorian era designs. Every once in a while, you will meet with a wild donkey or horse which were used as transport animals in the salt industry era. The lighthouse was built as a guiding beacon for ships after both the British and US governments experienced sizable losses from the capsizing of their ships at the northern end of Grand Turk. This was caused by the north reef, which is a shallow treacherous reef.

When we say that the beaches in Turks and Caicos are all stunning, we mean it. A Bajari Beach excursion really takes the cake, though, offering an option for private cabanas or lounge chairs, plus most cruise lines’ excursions include at least some food and beverages. The beach is known as a party spot, complete with a DJ, so if that’s your jam, this might be the Turks and Caicos excursion for you. It is important to understand the guidelines of your particular cruise line prior to sailing to ensure a seamless visit. Having your passport, valid driver’s license, or other state-issued form of ID, and any necessary forms signed will allow for this. It is also best practice to coordinate your excursions and itineraries through your cruise line directly to avoid any miscommunication.

There is a replica of the spacecraft near the entrance of Grand Turk’s airport. According to the official government site, there are approximately 3,720 residents on the island, and it is the second-largest populated island in the Turks and Caicos. It used to be a salt-producing town, and evidence of the salt industry from the late 1600s to early 1900s is still available in some parts of the capital Cockburn Town. This Caribbean destination should be on your list of places to visit, it's stunning! Here are all the things to do in Grand Turk while on your cruise vacation. They became extinct due to slavery and diseases in the 1500s and actually left the island uninhabited for over a century.

If you’re in search of authentic cuisine, Margaritaville, Sandbar Restaurant, Jack’s Shack, and The Bird Cage Restaurant are perfect spots for this. Taxi services are always available on Grand Turk and can be rented from the same locations where rental cars are available, in addition to smaller locations scattered throughout the island.
